“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” When St. Paul penned these words to the church in Galatia, the church was on the precipice of falling backward into the slaveries that had held them in bondage prior to their Christian experience. Still today, we fall pray to attitudes, mindsets and habits (among other things) that hold us and others in bondage. PLEASE NOTE: From September through June we have two worship services, one at 8:30 a.m. and another at 11:00 a.m. In July and August we have one service, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
About Our Worship
The worship style of First Church of God is perhaps best described as “blended.” This means that we seek to blend the old, enduring practices of Christian worship with new, contemporary expressions of love for God. On a given Sunday, we may sing some of the old hymns of the church, as well as some modern songs and choruses. We may observe and respond to a modern liturgical dance, a dramatic sketch or a video clip; or we may repeat an ancient prayer or recite a very old confession of faith. In all of these forms, old and new, our worship is intended to bring praise to God and to help us to respond faithfully to God’s transforming love.
By intention, our two Sunday morning worship services are identical. While we have great respect for many churches that have opted to provide two or more very different worship services (traditional and contemporary, for example), we have chosen to have two identical, blended services. Our blended worship is intended to bring together a diverse gathering of people. A quick glimpse around on any given Sunday morning will show that that has in fact happened! The very young and the very old (and all ages in between) gather for our services. We believe that this sort of diversity brings praise to God and reflects God’s intentions to form a church that breaks down barriers (such as age differences and music preferences) that all too often separate people from one another (see Galatians 3:28).
